In Britain they used to say "John Sebastian Bach" for "Johann", and
"C.P.E. Bach", with the English initial for "Carl", is still seen.
And in German to say "Charlemagne" instead of "Karl der Grosse" would
seem perverse.

To say that Bilbo's breath was taken away is no description at all. There
are no words left to express his staggerment, since Men changed the language
that they learned of elves in the days when all the world was wonderful.
