Iku is derived from yuku, which has the same irregularity, namely,
yutta, so a presumed ban on _iita_ doesn't hold up there.

I can't find any either, but I also can't find any verbs ending in -iku
past tense -itta except for iku itself and compounds with iku. A rule
that applies to only one verb is indistinguishable from an irregularity.
