Romanian, in which the difference between (1) and (2) is very vivid,
got a heavy overlay of French lexis in the 19th century. Spanish also
has 3 flavors: inherited, borrowed, and a third class that is either
(1) modified by (2) or (2) modified by (1), depending on which scholars
you listen to.
