IIRC that's indeed what happened, at least according to some papers I've read
about Catalan. Some people even say that it's the same phenomenon that brought
forms like "tengo" in Spanish. IIRC it happened also in Old French, but there
it disappeared completely, falling with the loss of distinction between endings.
